Our Zinfandels are lovely to enjoy soon after you receive them (we always suggest letting them rest for a few weeks after shipping), and they tend to continue gaining complexity over the next several years. Many on our team especially enjoy them around 3–5 years from the vintage date.

Our Petite Syrahs are built for a bit more time and can age beautifully; even 10–12 years from bottling, they often show wonderfully at their peak. Of course, this assumes ideal cellar conditions, and we always recommend a generous decant for the best experience. Well, because Larry loves Zin!

...and that Zinfandel is California's story in a glass. It is the variety most closely tied to California's agricultural and winemaking heritage, a grape that is uniquely American and Californian.

If you want to understand California wine, start with Zinfandel. No other grape is so deeply woven into the history of this state. We bottle individual vineyards to showcase differences in soil, climate, and age of vines are important and that Zinfandel is a diverse variety.

Cabernet may be California's luxury grape, but Zinfandel is California's heritage grape.

Different spelling, same grape—just with a little extra story behind it.

“Petite Sirah” is the name most Americans know for the grape Durif, a variety created in France in the 1800s by botanist François Durif. Despite the similar name, it’s not a smaller version of Syrah—it’s actually a cross between Syrah and the little known Peloursin grape.

So why do we spell it “Petite Syrah”? For us, it’s a nod to the grape’s roots. We like to highlight its connection to Syrah itself, as well as its French heritage. The spelling reflects both the grape’s lineage and the style of wine we aim to craft—one that leans into elegance and structure that can hold up for decades.

While Zinfandel doesn't come with an official bottle shape, Larry Turley chose the classic Burgundy-style bottle as a nod to wines that are all about place. Like our single-vineyard wines, it was distinctive, a little unconventional, and impossible to confuse with anything else.

For years, our bottles were—let's just say—memorable. Their broad shape stood out on the table, but it also inspired plenty of feedback from customers attempting to squeeze them into standard wine racks. Over time, that oversized bottle became part of the Turley identity: distinctive, a little stubborn, and hard to ignore.

But we also listened. A few years ago, we thoughtfully redesigned the bottle, slimming it down just enough to fit more comfortably in your cellar without sacrificing the character that made it uniquely Turley. As an added bonus, the lighter bottle reduced glass usage and freight impacts, making it a more environmentally friendly choice. Same spirit, better fit. 🍷

If you’ve opened a Turley bottle, you might have noticed the four stars on our corks and labels, they’re more than just decoration—they’re personal.

Each star represents one of Larry’s four daughters. It’s a small but meaningful tribute that keeps family at the heart of everything we do. Every bottle carries that reminder forward.

That's a bit like asking when someone becomes "wise." There’s no official age requirement for an old vine, but at Turley, we generally consider a vineyard to be "old vine" once it reaches 50 years of age. Many of our vineyards have long surpassed that milestone—some are more than 100 years old, having been planted before Prohibition, before freeways, and long before anyone had heard of social media.

With age comes perspective. Older vines naturally produce fewer grapes, concentrating their energy into fruit with remarkable depth, complexity, and character. They may not move as quickly as they once did, but they still know exactly what they're doing.

More than that, these vineyards are living pieces of California history. We don't just farm old vines—we steward them, preserving a legacy that might otherwise disappear. After all, some stories are too good not to pass down.
