Our Why

Preserving California’s
Agri-"cultural" history

Preserving California’s heritage through organic farming is at the heart of Turley’s identity. By responsibly caring for our farmland and waterways, we help protect our communities while continuing the tradition of artisanal winemaking that has been part of human culture for more than 8,000 years.

“One of the legends of California wine.”

Larry Turley

Born in Tennessee and raised in Georgia, Larry Turley spent his early years on a farm. After moving to California as a young man, he channeled his passion for preservation into medicine, working as an emergency room physician for over 20 years.

In 1993, Larry founded Turley Wine Cellars to pursue his true calling: preserving historic vineyards and crafting world-class Zinfandel. Today, the winery has produced wine from over 50 different vineyards, many with vines dating back to the late 1800s. In 1997, Larry retired from medicine to dedicate himself fully to the winery and his family.

Larry Turley built more than a winery—he built a philosophy rooted in restoration. Where others saw outdated vineyards, he saw history worth saving. While others chased trends, he pursued longevity and legacy.
