Why Extra Virgin Matters

To tell the story of the Turley Estate, we have to begin long before it was called Turley—and long before it was part of Rancho Carne Humana. This land sits in a region long cared for by the Wappo people, whose history in Napa Valley reaches back thousands of years. That deeper history matters to us, because it reminds us that farming here is part of a much longer relationship between people, plants, and place.

In the 19th century, this property became part of Rancho Carne Humana, the Mexican land grant that shaped much of northern Napa Valley’s early agricultural landscape. As St. Helena grew into a farming community, olive trees were planted on the estate—some dating back to the mid-1850s. More than 170 years later, those trees are still here, still bearing fruit, and still connecting us to the layered agricultural history of this place.

When Turley Wine Cellars was founded here in 1993, the estate was certified organic by CCOF, reflecting the farming philosophy that continues to guide us today: care for the soil, respect old vines and old trees, and preserve the land wherever possible. The property is also protected by a land conservation easement, helping ensure this historic agricultural landscape remains intact for future generations.

Making extra virgin olive oil from these trees is one way we continue that stewardship. Like our wines, it begins with healthy fruit, careful farming, and a deep respect for place. Pressed from a single estate harvest, this olive oil is fresh, vibrant, and rooted in history—a pantry staple, yes, but also a living expression of the Turley Estate and the land we are grateful to farm.
