The Pesenti Vineyard has been growing grapes since 1922, making it one of the oldest continuously farmed vineyard sites on California's Central Coast. Planted originally to Zinfandel on the rolling hills west of Templeton, it quickly established itself as one of Paso Robles' most distinctive sources for Zinfandel. More than a century later, those same Zinfandel vines remain, joined by carefully selected plantings of Petite Syrah, Grenache Noir, and Grenache Blanc.
Millions of years ago, this land lay beneath an ancient sea. Today, the site sits atop uplifted seabed composed of fractured limestone and marine sediments, so porous that winter rainfall can penetrate deep into the soil profile and remain available to the vines throughout the growing season. In a region known for long, dry summers and scant rainfall, this remarkable geology allows us to dry-farm while producing wines of depth, freshness, and balance. The property's marine origins are impossible to ignore—over the years, fossilized whale vertebrae and other marine relics have surfaced among the vines.
The combination of calcareous soils, dry farming, and the cooling influence of the Templeton Gap yields wines with both richness and vibrancy. While each variety expresses the site in its own way, all share the energy, structure, and unmistakable sense of place that have made Pesenti such a treasured vineyard for generations. More than one hundred years after the first vines were planted, Pesenti remains a living piece of California wine history and one of the Central Coast's most enduring heritage vineyards.
