2023 Dragon Vineyard
Cabernet Sauvignon

Howell Mountain

When we first planted Dragon Vineyard, the fact that Howell Mountain is hallowed ground for Cabernet Sauvignon did not escape us. Though we devoted most of the site to Zinfandel, we also planted a small parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon. And boy, are we glad we did. Perched at 2,250 feet on the eastern ridge of Howell Mountain, Dragon benefits from red volcanic soils, ample sunshine, and an eastern exposure that allows the vines to cool earlier in the day than many neighboring sites.

That combination of elevation, soil, and aspect yields a Cabernet Sauvignon that is unmistakably Howell Mountain, with dense dark fruit, mountain spice, and the formidable tannins that have made this appellation famous. Yet there is also a freshness and refinement here that sets Dragon apart. Powerful without being heavy and structured without sacrificing grace, it is a fitting expression of one of Napa Valley's most revered mountain growing regions.

Looking East

While Howell Mountain is known for producing intensely structured wines, Dragon's eastern exposure offers a subtle but important distinction. As the sun begins its descent, the steep mountainside falls into shade earlier in the day, allowing the vines to rest during the peak of the evening heat. This natural moderation preserves freshness and extends the growing season, fostering slow, even ripening.

This vineyard produces two compelling expressions of Howell Mountain terroir: Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. These are wines that capture both the drama of their setting and the restraint afforded by Dragon's unique exposure—unmistakably Howell Mountain, yet singularly Dragon.
